La investigación sobre el origen de esta familia excluye que pueda haber vínculos con las localidades homónimas de Carbonara Scrivia y Carbonara Lomellina (hoy Carbonara al Ticino) aunque Casalis en la voz relativa afirma que este último "era un feudo de una familia de Pavía que lo trajo el nombre"; La familia sigue siendo imposible de rastrear y casi nunca existió. Goggi los ignora en su folleto "Noticias históricas sobre Carbonara Scrivia", aunque se conocen casos aislados de individuos que por una mayor identificación agregaron a su nombre el lugar de origen que permaneció más tarde como apellido; De hecho, Lorenzo C., de finales de Rocco, ejerció el notario en Tortona en los siglos XIV-XV y Guglielmo di Giovanni en C. en el siglo XVI (número de serie de los notarios que actuaron en tortonés entre los siglos XIV y XVIII). ¡GB de Crollalanza los dice de Lerici y Scorza
