Se ne à memoria nel 1120 in Guglielmo Carbonelli signore di Simmari in Calabria. Divisa in più rami, il principale rimase in Calabria, e si stabilì per alcun tempo nella città di Paola ov'ebbe nobiltà. Nel sec. XVII si trasferì a Napoli. Pietro scudiero regio e nobile di Valenza ne portò un ramo in Monopoli l'anno 1495 ove fu aggregato a quel patriziato. Un altro ramo fu nel 1511 trapiantato in Mantova da un Prospero, e vi ebbe i titoli di conte e di marchese, e si estinse nel 1740. Fra i molti feudi dei Carbonelli si annovera la baronia di Ailano, di Letino e di Campofigliolo ed il marchesato di Barbasso. Pietro nel 1269 cav. templario; Rinaldo famigliare del Re Carlo I da cui ebbe in dono il Casal dei Comiti; Raimondo detto Dominus et Nobilis Vir fu castellano di S. Giorgio e governatore di gaeta; Francesco conte palatino;
