Antichissima ed assai nobile famiglia lombarda, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Tradizione vuole che essa abbia tratto il proprio nome dalla signoria di Castel Carcano, nei pressi di Milano, di cui era investito, circa nel 970, un Bonizzo o Bonizzone. Stabilitasi successivamente in Milano, si divise nel tempo in quattro grandi linee. La prima discende da Corrado Carcano, di Filippo, di Beltramo, podestà di Genova nel 1289 e di Bologna nel 1295. Il ramo primogenito di questa linea ebbe il feudo di Nicorvo, di cui fu investito nel 1640 Marco-Francesco; ha ricevuto conferma dell'avita nobiltà con Sovrana Risoluzione 28 gennaio 1817. La seconda linea discende da Ardizotto, fiorente nel 1340. Filippo, figlio del predetto, fu investito nel 1390 della signoria di Vertemate, nello Stato di Milano. Appartengono a questa linea: Bonaventura Carcano, creato conte nel 1688 da Vittorio-Amedeo duca di Savoia;

Cimiero: Il cigno del campo, uscente.
