L'antico contado d'Acquosana, compreso tra il Tanaro, il Belbo, Asti e la futura Alessandria, era nei secoli XII e XIII feudo di un consortile, costituito da una sessantina di famiglie, tutte discendenti dai conti Manfredinghi di Acquosana; da questi ebbero origine i signori di Lanerio, di Magliano, di Alice Belcolle, di Castelnuovo Calcea, di S. Stefano Belbo, e dai predetti signori di Magliano i Carefano.
