The ancient countryside of Acquosana, between Tanaro, Belbo, Asti and the future Alessandria, was in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries a fiefdom of a consortium, consisting of about sixty families, all descendants of the Manfredinghi counts of Acquosana; from these originated the lords of Lanerio, Magliano, Alice Belcolle, Castelnuovo Calcea, S. Stefano Belbo, and the aforementioned lords of Magliano i Carena. Part of the territory along the course of the Tanaro divided, in two, the domains of the Marquises of Monferrato who aspired to join, so the counts allied themselves either with the Asti people or with the Alexandrians to contrast the aims of the neighbor who held them close to the sides; with the advent and expansion of the municipalities, however, Asti and Alessandria were also pressing to annex that countryside in vassalage, whose feudal lords, rather than submitting to their aggressors, abandoned the lands they had suffered after
