Very ancient Germanic family with family branches in Bavaria, Austria and Switzerland, moreover two branches took the name of Carl of Hochenbalken in Switzerland (SRI nobles from 1 September 1413), Carl de Carlshofen in Austria (ennobled on 29 Nov. 1559 , Baroni on 23 Aug. 1649) and Carl of Mühlbach in Bavaria (SRI nobles since 1598). The Carls of Berlin were ennobled on 18 October 1861 and confirmed in 1868; to those of Bavaria the weapon was granted on Jan. 2. 1524.
