Famille très ancienne et très noble originaire d'Arcevia mais avec des résidences également à Ancône et Sassoferrato, dont les premiers souvenirs remontent au Xe troisième siècle. L'ancêtre connu et certain est Giovan Battista, qui vécut en 1480. La famille était très ravie du pape Pie IV, de Cosme III, grand-duc de Toscane, de Francesco Maria II d'Urbino et des papes Innocent XI et Clément XI, donc à tel point qu'ils leur ont décerné de leurs ordres plusieurs membres de la chevalerie. Alberto I, auditeur de carte. Enrico Caetani, plus tard frère capucin, mourut en 1588. Le pape Innocent XIII, par un bref du 20 décembre 1721, décora Francesco Ottavio, qui était à son couronnement, des titres de chevalier et de comte palatin, l'investissant également du fief de Farneto. Il eut ces deux enfants : Giuseppe (1739-1814), fils aîné, qui s'expatria pour des raisons politiques et alla s'installer à Milan et
