La comunità ha i titoli di contessa di Salzasco e S. Bernardo per Patenti 29 aprile 1695, e i titoli di signora di S. Michele con S. Grato, S. Pietro e S. Giovanni di Moncucco. I primogeniti dei marchesi di Saluzzo portavano il titolo di conti di Carmagnola. Più tardi, nel 1533, Carmagnola fu data in feudo ai Tornielli; poi venne l'affrancamento. Sul cadere del secolo XVIII, nel 1785, fu data in appannaggio al duca del Genevese, Carlo Felice, col titolo di principe di Carmagnola. Sono a stampa gli "Ordini e stabilimenti politici dell'illustrissima città di Carmagnola, contessa di Salzaio e San Bernardo, de' Santi Michele e Grato e di San Giovanni; ecc." pubblicati nel 1741. Notissimo nella storia Francesco Bussone, detto il conte di Carmagnola perchè nativo del luogo. Motto della famiglia: Dat candida coelo Altro ramo.
