Alte und sehr adelige Familie ursprünglich aus Canobio, die sich im Laufe der Jahrhunderte in verschiedenen Gebieten Italiens und der Schweiz verbreitete. Früher hieß es Del Sasso da Carmine, weil es auf dem Sasso di Carmine eine Burg errichtete. Mit der Zeit nannte er sich einfach Carmine. Uberto und Giovanni, Anhänger Ottone Viscontis, wurden von ihm als Bürger Mailands ernannt und erhielten das Privileg, die Visconti-Schlange in das Adelswappen aufzunehmen. Giovan-Francesco, Doktor der Rechtswissenschaften, schrieb die Geschichte von Cannobio und seinen Familien. Ein Zweig baute eine kleine Kirche, die der Jungfrau Maria gewidmet war. Um 1150 organisierten sie sich schließlich zu einem gemeinsamen Leben und es entstanden Karmeliterklöster, die sich mit der Rückkehr der Kreuzfahrer auch im Westen, insbesondere in Sizilien und England, vermehrten. Damals entstanden zahlreiche Kirchen, die der Madonna del Carmine (oder Carmelo) gewidmet waren. Der Name verbreitete sich wahrscheinlich in ganz Italien und gelangte bis ins Piemont,
