Antigua y muy noble familia originaria de Canobio que se extendió, a lo largo de los siglos, por diversas zonas de Italia y Suiza. Antiguamente se llamaba Del Sasso da Carmine, debido a un castillo que construyó en Sasso di Carmine. Con el tiempo, simplemente se hizo llamar Carmine. Uberto y Giovanni, partidarios de Ottone Visconti, fueron creados por él como ciudadanos de Milán, dándoles el privilegio de incluir la serpiente Visconti en el escudo nobiliario. Giovan-Francesco, doctor en derecho, escribió la historia de Cannobio y sus familias. Una rama construyó una pequeña iglesia dedicada a la Virgen María. Hacia 1150 finalmente se organizaron en una vida común y surgieron monasterios carmelitas que, con el regreso de los cruzados, se multiplicaron también en Occidente y precisamente en Sicilia e Inglaterra.
