Antica ed illustre famiglia calabrese, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. La tradizione vuole che essa sia stata portata nel Regno delle Due Sicilie da un cavaliere spagnolo della nobile casata Carni o Carnì che, a sua volta, condivide l'agnazione con i marchesi Carné ed i baroni Charny, entrambe illustrissime prosapie francesi. In Calabria la famiglia Carnì ha posseduto numerosi feudi, tra cui le baronie di Saele e Pertosi, ed i suoi esponenti si sono spesso distinti tanto nell'esercizio delle professioni giuridiche quanto nello svolgersi delle carriere militari. Questa illustre famiglia ha inoltre contratto parentela con altre nobili casate del Regno delle Due Sicilie, tra cui i Sbaglia, tramite il matrimonio di donna Isabella Carnì (Melicuccà, 1680 - ?), dei baroni di Saele e Pertosi, con don Gerolamo Sbaglia (Mileto, 1671 - 1710).
