Several origins are given to the Sheep; some derive us from the Counts of Moutos, France; others who come from D. Lourenço Anes Carnes, whose surname was derived from C .; still others, who would be from Spain, as the nickname already existed in the 12th century. There was, however, the Serra de C., old designation of a mountain near Porto, and a parish of the same name, in the old municipality of Gestaçô. The oldest individual known with the surname, most likely from a nickname, is Pedro C., lord of the lands of Valdevez at the time of Count D. Henrique, from whom the family came. From Vila do Conde: branch of the family of C. do Porto, descendant of Pedro C., vassal of King D. João I, who donated the farm of Tresgude, in Gaia, to 3.5.1385, councilor of the city of Porto in 1380, and his wife Catarina Afonso. Her great-grandson, by legitimate varony, Gomes C. (son of Gil C., noble knight of the House of King D. Afonso V, and his wife Leonor Anes) passed to Vila do Conde in the second half of the century. XV, and from this and his wife was João C. Gaio, a nobleman of the CR, attorney for Vila do Conde à Cortes of 1641, who married, on 17.7.1619, with his cousin D. Francisca C., parents of D. Catarina C., successor, married to Domingos Álvares da Costa, graduated in Law from UC, and mr. of the house and morgado do Outerio, freg. from Burgães, Santo Tirso. Of this couple he was great-grandson and successor, by legitimate varony, José C. da Costa de Magalhães Brandão, mr. from the houses of Costa or Cadeia Velha.
