La familia original de Tortona, muy antigua y noble, que se extendió a lo largo de los siglos en diferentes regiones de Italia y Europa, de donde sus miembros, acogieron en las importantes oficinas de las ciudades donde vivían, fueron conspicuos y adquirieron prestigio. El marqués Vittorio Spreti, en su "Encyclopaedia Storico-Nobiliare Italiana", de esta familia, escribe: "Carnelevario, Carnevarii, Carlevarius son nombres que se repiten con frecuencia en los antiguos documentos de Tortona reproducidos en el periódico más reciente, los resúmenes y las crónicas; aunque de diferentes la escritura a mano está destinada a identificar a aquellos nacidos de una sola schiatta vieja, la del Carnaval ". Massa Saluzzo, en la pág. 88 de sus "Observaciones sobre la información histórica de los antiguos y modernos tortoneses escritos por el Conde G. Carnevale", dice, dirigiéndose a este último, "... no por esta razón, sin embargo, había razones para suponer que Carnevaria
