Famiglia trentina di antica e nobile tradizione, originaria dalla Bretagna, la cui cognominizzazione originale, Carpelle, divenne Carpella nel XVIII secolo per le solite cause della fonetica storica, della pronuncia dialettale e degli errori di trascrizione. Vari autori descrivono questa casata ascritta alla nobiltà fin dal XIV secolo ma l'unico atto d'archivio ritrovato nel "Nobiliaire et Armorial de Bretagne" menziona un Claudio, podestà di Guise, ascritto alla nobiltà nel 1651. In Italia i nomi dei Carpella sono prevalentemente ricordati in testi, atti notarili e contratti di vendita di terre e case i quali ci forniscono una ulteriore conferma che erano di condizione agiata e nobile.
