Fu signora della sua patria per circa un secolo. Nel 1314 Giacomo I fattosi capo di una fazione popolare cacciò in bando i magistrati, e nel 1318 si fece capo della repubblica. Ebbe a combattere contro Cane della Scala, signor di Verona. Marsilio, nipote del precedente, trasferì il dominio della città a Cane della Scala, ma lo ricuperò coll'aiuto dei Fiorentini e dei Veneziani nel 1337. Ubertino III principe di Padova, morì nel 1345; Marsilietto non regnò che due soli mesi; Giacomo II morì assassinato nel 1350; Giacomino fu acclamato signore della patria, ma per opera del suo nipote Francesco cessò di vivere in una fortezaza nel 1372. Francesco, valoroso in guerra, aggiunse al suo stato Treviso, Feltre e Belluno; ma vinto da Galeazzo Visconti, dovette cedergli nel 1388 Padova e Treviso. Morì nel castello di Como l'anno 1393.
