Ele foi a dama de sua terra natal por cerca de um século. Em 1314, Giacomo I, que se tornou chefe de uma facção popular, baniu os magistrados e, em 1318, tornou-se chefe da república. Ele teve que lutar contra Cane della Scala, signor di Verona. Marsilio, sobrinho do anterior, transferiu o domínio da cidade para Cane della Scala, mas o recuperou com a ajuda dos florentinos e venezianos em 1337. Ubertino III, príncipe de Pádua, morreu em 1345; Marsilietto reinou apenas dois meses; Tiago II morreu assassinado em 1350; Giacomino foi aclamado senhor da pátria, mas pelo sobrinho Francesco deixou de viver em um fortezaza em 1372.
