Ancienne et très noble famille bolognaise, qui, selon certaines reconstructions, descendrait des Canedoli, illustre prosapia bolognaise, mais, ayant prévalu la faction Bentivogli, ils auraient été, avec les Ghislieri, exilés. Lodovico, Baldassarre et Lambertino auraient donc déménagé à Ravenne et, pour mieux se protéger des dangers des ennemis, ils auraient changé le nom de famille en Carrari. Cependant, il faut noter qu'une famille Carrari est active et présente à Bologne depuis l'Antiquité. Un Rolandino Carrari, en effet, fut en 1188 témoin de la donation du château de Crespeliano faite par les copropriétés à la municipalité de Bologne. De plus, deux membres de cette famille ont enseigné le droit dans la seconde moitié du XIIIe siècle, à savoir Tommaso d'Albertino et Albertino, son fils.
