Antica ed assai nobile famiglia veneta, con diramazioni in Padova ed in Venezia, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia e d'Europa. Tradizione vuole che essa si sia originata quale diramazione dei Carrara, conosciuti anche come Carraresi, dinastia padovana signora della propria patria per circa un secolo. La storia dei cognomi Carrara, Carraresi e Carraro ha infatti comuni e antichissime radici, risalenti all'alto Medioevo; più nel dettaglio la prima attestazione risale ad un Ugozio, giunto in Italia nel 774 al seguito dell'imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero Carlo Magno. La discendenza è storicamente provata con un Gumberto, deceduto nel 970. In ogni modo, la famiglia Carrara già nel 1149 ottenne investitura del castello omonimo, nel padovano. Le notizie relativa ad essa si fanno più numerose nel XIV secolo, quando fioriva Giacomo I che, nel 1318, fu ammesso nel nobile Consiglio di Padova. Lo stesso aveva preso in moglie una
