Diede principio alla famiglia C. di Sicilia don Ramondo Calcerano de Cartellas, che passò di Catalogna a' serviggi del Rè Pietro d'Aragona, dal quale in Messina fu armato cavaliero con Bernardo del Bosco, ed eletto Conte di Catanzaro, e non lunge poi hebbe dal medesmo Rè I Castelli di Catania, e di Leontini: generò costui con Agata Staiti nobile Messinesa sua moglie, Pietro, Ramondo, e Federico, che vissero nobilmente con carico di Castellani di Leontini, e di Siragusa. Federico parimente hebbe il governo di Minèo, durante la sua vita, e procreò Ramondo, Gregorio, e Pietro, che seguirono i vestiggi paterni, ed hebbero dal Re Martino alcuni territorii in Leontini, ed in Noto, perloche Gregorio habìto in quella Città, e Raimondo in Leontini, ed ambedue furono progenitori di molti virtuosi gentil'huomini, i quali concorsero ne' primi uffici, e carichi di quelle Città, come chiaramente lo mostrano gl'antichi Scrutinij della Reginal
