The name 'Carter' originates from England . it is an accupatiobal name for a transporter of goods, from the Middle English word 'carter', a derivative from the Anglo Norman French word 'car(e)tier', in itself a derivative of the Old Flemish word 'caret', a diminutive of 'car', meaning cart (from the Late Latin word 'carrum', cf. Carrier). The Old Flemish word coalesced with an earlier Middle English word 'carte(e)' meaning cart, which is from either the Old Norman word 'kartr' or theOld English word 'croet', both of which, like the Late Latin word, were probably originally derived from Celtic). Compiled information from Historical and Private archive's has confirmed that the surname 'Carter' and or it's variant's, dates as far back as the *13th century were a 'Jocus Caretarius', from the County of Oxfordshire, England, is recorded on the Hundred Rolls in 1273. The exact period of settlement in North America has not been definately determined but Information extracted from Public and Civil registry archive's confirm that one of the first settlers was a certain J'ohn Carter', aged30, a servant from Wiltshire, England arrived aboard an unnamed ship on the 14th of March 1774, seeking employment . He settled in New York. 'Charles Shelby Carter' of New York City, New York, joined Field artillery Officers Reserve Corps, as 2nd Lieutenant on the 28th of October 1918, He became an Investment Banker in 1919, and was the Head of and organised the All America General Corporation in 1929. Today, 'Carter' is the '38th' most common surname in North America.
