La familia Casale es muy antigua y noble, de origen alemán, tomó su nombre de un lugar en las montañas cerca de Cortona llamado Casale, del cual tenía el señorío. Un Rinaldo en 1150 vino a vivir a Cortona del que se hizo ciudadano. Siete príncipes derivaron de él que con el título de vicarios imperiales dominaron esa ciudad durante aproximadamente un siglo, y el último de ellos fue Luigi-Battista, quien murió en 1420 en Casteluovo di Napoli después de once años de encarcelamiento que lo hizo sufrir por el rey Ladislao. quien se había apoderado de Cortona y lo vendió a la República Florentina.
