La famille Casale est très ancienne et noble, d'origine allemande, elle tire son nom d'un endroit de la montagne près de Cortona appelé Casale, dont elle était la seigneurie. Un Rinaldo en 1150 vint vivre à Cortona dont il fut fait citoyen. De lui dérivent sept princes qui avec le titre de vicaires impériaux ont dominé cette ville pendant environ un siècle, et le dernier d'entre eux était Luigi-Battista, décédé en 1420 à Casteluovo di Napoli après onze ans d'emprisonnement sévère lui ont fait subir par le roi Ladislao qui avait pris possession de Cortona et l'avait cédée à la République florentine. Avec lui mourut cette fameuse maison qui comptait des hommes illustres pour leur ingéniosité, leur valeur militaire et leurs positions.
