A família Casale é muito antiga e nobre, de origem alemã, recebeu o nome de um lugar nas montanhas perto de Cortona chamado Casale, do qual possuía o senhorio. Um Rinaldo, em 1150, veio morar em Cortona, do qual foi feito cidadão. Derreteram sete príncipes que, com o título de vigários imperiais, dominaram a cidade por cerca de um século, e o último foi Luigi-Battista, que morreu em 1420 em Casteluovo di Napoli, após onze anos de encarceramento, e sofreu com o rei Ladislao. que havia apreendido Cortona e vendido para a República Florentina. Com ele morreu esta famosa casa que tinha homens ilustres por engenhosidade, valor militar e posições sustentadas.
