Originaria di Roma, trapiantata nella città di Bari al tempo delle invasioni dei barbari, ed ascritta a quel patriziato in tempo assai remoto- Nel 1156 Guglielmo il Malvagio ordinò la distruzione di Bari, e dette due giorni di tempo agli abitanti per uscirne fuori: la famiglia Casamassima si ritornò nelle sue possessioni a 15 miglia di distanza dando origine al paese che da lei si chiamò Casa Massimi, e che tenne quel feudo con titolo baronale. Guido nel 1195 ebbe la conferma di questo feudo da Arrigo VI di Svevia; Giordano nel 1215 fu signore di Palagiano.
