O Primeiro que se conhece deste apelido é Gonçalo C., que viveu no reinado de D. Fernando I e seguiu as partes do Mestre de Avis. Era primo de Martim Vasques, de Gil Lourenço e de Gil Fernandes, o Bom, que defendeu Elvas, Morou na cidade de Évora, de onde se julga fosse natural, e na mesma admimistrou o morgado de S. Miguel de Machede, instituído por seu tio Gil Rodrigues de Vasconcelos. Recebeu-se com Leonor Gonçalves, como se verifica duma sentença do cabido acerca do referido morgado, a qual alguns autores supõem ser filha dum indivíduo da família Sousa de Alvim e que os descendentes dizem que o era de Álvaro Gonçalves de Moura. Deste casamento nasceram, entre outros, João Casco e Martim Casco, que deixaram geração do mesmo apelido. A família parece originária da Astúrias, pois lá existe o mesmo apelido, porém com armas diversas, que alguns autores dizem ter sido também usadas em Portugal. Timbre: um leão de púrpura com o casco do escudo na cabeça.
