Nobilissimo casato ligure, portatosi in Sicilia, anteriormente al XV secolo. Il primo personaggio, ad esso appartenuto, di cui si abbia notizia certa è un Niccolò, tesoriere generale del regno, che, in data 16 gennaio 1397, ebbe concessa la terra di Saponara; nel 1399 ebbe confermati i casali di Bavuso, Calvaruso, Mauro-giovanni e S. Andrea,; in data 10 gennaio 1401 il feudo di Graniti e Mangiavacche. Un Giovanni, inoltre, possedette il feudo di Cutò, nel quale gli succedette la figlia Granata, moglie di Arnaldo Spatafora. Altro ramo. Famiglia fiorita, nel secolo XVII, in Nicosia, Messina ed Enna. Col titolo di Barone di Castagna qual discendente da Luigi (1809), fu iscritto Enrico, di Francesco, di Luigi. Fratelli: Giovanni e Vincenzo. Col titolo di Nobile dei Baroni di Castagna qual discendente da Francesco ( 1782), fu iscritto Nicolò, di Giuseppe, di Francesco.
