Famiglia patrizia genovese, di cui si trovano le prime memorie dallo scorcio del sec. XIV in Sori, Genova e Spezia, nel quale ultimo luogo maggiormente si sviluppò e ora ancora fiorisce. Difatti il 1399 si depositavano nel chiostretto di S. Francesco in Genova i corpi dominorum Petri et Lazari de Castagnuola quondam Antonii; così pure si depositava in S. Maria della Consolazione Ioannes Petrus de Castagnuola de Spedia capitano di fanti. Dai detti fratelli Pietro e Lazzaro discesero due linee principali, delle quali la seconda si estinse nel sec. XVII, e la prima è quella che fu annotata nell'Elenco ufficiale nobiliare italiano del 1922 in persona di Giulio di Filippo di Baldassarre; la cui ascendenza aveva ottenuta dall'imperatore Massimiliano (1496) nelle persone dei figli di Bartolomeo di detto Pietro la nobiltà del S.R.I, poi confermata dall'imperatore Carlo V (1551).
