Antica ed assai nobile famiglia italiana, secondo alcuni autori originaria della città di Cava de’ Tirreni, secondo altri di Ravello, ramificatasi poi in Tramonti, Nocera de’ Pagani, Cava de’ Tirreni e Castellammare. Città dove essa godette nobiltà. Lo storico nocerino Michele de Santi, così come il canonico Gennaro Senatore, basandosi sul significato del cognome stesso, essendo il gastaldo un funzionario della corte regia in epoca longobardo ed avendo la famiglia seguito il diritto longobardo per la proprietà dei beni sino al secolo decimo quinto, ritiene che la famiglia sia di origine longobarda, ponendo come capostipite del casato Dauferio Balbo, I° conte di Nocera. In ogni modo, dal 1100 al 1200 i Castaldo, con il titolo di domini e militi, erano già presenti nel territorio nocerino, cavese e della costa amalfitana. In territorio nocerino, nel 1052, ebbero concessione da Teodora, principessa di Salerno, di un terreno sito in Roccapiemonte; in Cava,
