Les chartes des Xème et XIème siècles qualifient les seigneurs de Castellane du titre de sire et de prince. Le premier sire de Castellane est Boniface 1er, qui vivait en 1089. Pendant longtemps les membres de cette importante maison se maintinrent par la force des armes dans l'indépendance des comtes de Provence et ne soumirent à l'hommage que vers la fin du XIIème siècle. Ses illustrations sont: Boniface IV, qui accompagna Charles d'Anjou à la conquête du royaume de Naples; Jean Ange, ambassadeur de France à Costantinople; Charles-Hyacinthe, ambassadeur de France en Pologne et à la cour de Turin; deux lieutenants-généraux, deux archevêques et plus de cent dignitaires ou chevaliers de l'ordre de Malte. Ses alliances principales sont avec les Adhémar, Blacas, Brancas, Contades, Forbin, Forcalquier, Glandevès, Pontevez, Rohan, Sabran, Sévigné, Simiane, Talleyrand, Villeneuve, etc. Parmi les représentants actuels de cette maison on signale: Boniface-Hippolyte, comte de Castellane, marié à Marie-Antoinette-Delphine Rolland de Sillans, dont: Boniface-Amédée-Marie, né le 26 avril 1856. Plusieurs branches de cette famille substintent dans d'autres départements.
