Familia española muy antigua y noble, originaria de las montañas de León. El origen de esta cognominación, según ilustres genealogistas, debe buscarse en el latín "Castellum", derivado a su vez del "Castel-mann" germánico (= señor de un castillo), probablemente referido a la condición de un, hoy desconocido, progenitor. Sin embargo, en el año 775, algunos caballeros de la familia Castellano pasaron por Castilla, acompañando al rey Don Alfonso II, quien les otorgó el privilegio de poblar la ciudad de Sahagún.
