Ancienne et très noble famille piémontaise, originaire de Grumello mais établie dans le Monferrato, de vertu claire et ancestrale, répartie au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Italie. La famille, dont la noblesse évidente est confirmée par sa présence dans le précieux "Subalpino Blasonarium" d'Antonio Manno, a possédé les titres de seigneurs de Viarigi. Parmi les personnages les plus influents appartenant à cette famille, il faut certainement rappeler que Bernardino Castellari, né à Viarigi, dans le Monferrato, dans la seconde moitié du XVe siècle. Initié à une carrière ecclésiastique sous la protection des Paleologi, marquis de Monferrato, il entra dans l'intimité du cardinal Giulio de 'Medici, dont le serviteur et confident "dans des affaires très secrètes et très importantes", comme il aimait lui-même se vanter plus tard. Avec l'élection de Giulio de 'Medici au pontificat, le 19 novembre 1523, il commença à jouer un rôle non secondaire dans les événements
