I Signori di Castelletto (d'Orba) debitori del cognome al luogo d'origine quasi sempre preceduto nei regesti e cartari dall'attributo di "dominus" erano vassalli dei marchesi obertenghi di Parodi; nel secolo XII quella terra fu contesa aspramente dai vicini che indussero i legittimi feudatari a sistemarsi altrove nel Genovesato e nel Tortonese ove attesero per oltre duecento anni ad importanti uffici ed alte magistrature. Un Enrico nel 1142 è teste in atto del 6 febbraio con cui i Borelli vendono un sedime in Tortona al priore di S. Bartolomeo; un altro Enrico, credendario, giura l'osservanza del trattato di pace ed alleanza coi genovesi della durata di 29 anni stipulato il 3 giugno 1197 dai consoli tortonesi e l'11 maggio 1198 delibera in merito ad un mutuo che il Comune contrae con i fratelli Loterengo; in Bassignana Giacomo del fu domino Oberto il 6 marzo 1210 dona beni al monastero di Rivalta;
