La famiglia è originaria di Nizza Mare e ripete la sua nobiltà da Giuseppe (Peppino) nato nel 1773, poi al servizio di Parma. Per benmeritarlo delle perdite sofferte "per la buona causa", la duchessa di Parma lo autorizzò a vendere, mediante lotteria, la villa Gaione, e il Re di Sardegna Carlo Felice, con R. Viglietto 8 febbraio 1827, gli concedette di smerciarne i biglietti nel regno sardo. Papa Gregorio XVI, con Breve 11 settembre 1832, lo creò conte; titolo che gli fu confermato dal duca di Parma il 3 febbraio 1851. Rimasto senza figli, morti piccoli, ottenne (4 settembre 1861) di trasmettere il titolo al nipote di fratello, Adolfo, ciò che avvenne per Regio Decreto 17 novembre 1861. Adolfo, nato a Torino nel 1807, morì a Bari il 29 novembre 1884, dopo essere stato successivamente vice-console sardo a Galatz, console a Gerusalemme (7 novembre 1844) e console generale a Marsiglia.
