Antica ed assai nobile famiglia siciliana, con residenza in Ragusa, ramo della illustre casata palermitana Castelli, come giusta il Crollalanza nel suo "Dizionario storico blasonico delle famiglie nobili e notabili italiane estinte e fiorenti", al volume I, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. La tradizione vuole che essa discenda dagli antichi conti di Terni, e, come riportato dall'araldista Francesco Zazzera, diramò in Lombardia, in Genova, in Treviso, in Bologna, in Roma, in Modena, in Reggio, in Milano, in Sicilia ed in Napoli. Sempre il Crollalanza riporta che capostipite dei Castelli di Palermo, e dunque anche dei Castello di Ragusa, fu un Gregorio che nell'anno 1608 da Genova passò nell'attuale capoluogo siciliano ed ivi acquistò la baronia di Dorilli, composta dei feudi lo Salicito, lo Casale e la Mandra, di cui ottenne investitura il 13 maggio 1629, la terra di Gagliano con il titolo di conte, di cui
