Originaria del regno di Valenza e dei Conti di Carlate, fu trapiantata in Sardegna dai fratelli Pierotto e Luigi, nobilissimi cavalieri valenzani. Venutivi a seguito dei sovrani aragonesi, acqquistarono nel 1479 da Don Enrico Enriquez, zio del re Ferdinando, la viscontea di Sanluri, i feudi di Laconi ed altri. Molte cospicue cariche coprirono nel regno di Sardegna, e furono sempre reputati dei primari e più doviziosi signori, ed ebbero i titoli di baroni, visconti, conti e marchesi. Nel 1642 e 1648 si distinse fra i cavalieri Sardi nella guerra di Catalogna Paolo Castelvi March. di Cea, signore di Siligo, Meilogu e Montesanto. Francesco fu Generale della cavalleria nazionale sarda, e nel 1638 vestì l'abito di S. Giacomo. Filippo V, con diploma 10 Marzo 1705 gli accordò il grandato di Spagna di prima classe annesso al titolo di marchese di Laconi trasmissibile a' suoi eredi e succesori in perpetuo. Di questa
