Antica ed assai nobile famiglia siciliana, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di illustri genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata nell'antico ed omonimo toponimo, un tempo nome della città di Enna, probabilmente, luogo natio dei capostipiti. In ogni modo, tal casato, in ogni epoca, sempre riuscì a distinguersi, grazie agli elevati personaggi, a cui diede i natali. Tra questi, senza nulla levar al valore degli omessi, rammentiamo: Guglielmo, il quale fu castellano del castellammare di Messina e stratigò di detta città, nell'anno 1212; notar Andrea, il quale fu secreto maestro portulano sotto re Pietro, nel 1282; Filippo, il quale ottenne, in data 1 maggio 1396, il feudo di Gurafi orientale, che possedette pure i feudi di Pascasia, Pollicarini e Grotte, che fu capitano di Taormina, nel 1403, che ottenne, nel 1416, per sé ed il figlio Niccolò, onze venti
