Antica famiglia napoletana, la quale discende dalla nobile famiglia siciliana dei Castronovo detti anche Castelnuovo o Castronuovo, di cui si ricordano un Gerardo, con la carica di castellano di Milazzo nel 1417, ed un altro Gerardo, con la carica di senatore di Palermo nel 1555-56. Secondo alcune ricostruzioni araldiche, entrambe le prosapie sarebbero una diramazione della nobile casata Castelnovo, o Castelnuovo, di Udine, a cui appartenne quel Pienzo, creato cavaliere dal Conte Enrico di Gorizia nel 1314 e che, nel 1320, ottenne dallo stesso conte le ville di Geloiz e di Predem situate sul Carso. Una ulteriore ipotesi araldica vede la famiglia Castelnuovo di Napoli discendere dai Castro, illustre famiglia spagnuola decorata della ducea di Taurisano che governò la Sicilia con la carica di Vicerè. In ogni modo, la famiglia Castronuovo, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, sempre è riuscita a produrre una serie di uomini che hanno reso illustre il suo nome,
