Famiglia antichissima in Umbria dove fiorì largamente per alte e remote tradizioni di onori. Fra le famiglie di Amelia e Narni che ebbero maggior lustro e pregio, merita uno dei posti più onorevoli questa dei C., già facoltosi in Narni fino dalla metà del sec. XIII. Avevano la signoria di Castel del Monte, posto fra Narni ed Amelia, e di cui Giovannello, di Pietro, vendette la sua parte, con la baronia, a Bartolomeo Cansacchi nel 1333 (Not. Pietro di Andrea di Todi). Furono accolti in Amelia nel ceto nobile, prima del 1327, e subito annoverati fra i primi per l'antica nobiltà e pre le alte dignità ricoperte. Tanto nell'istromento di pace fra Amelia e Todi del 1340, che in quello di edizione al Cardinale Albornoz del 1354, i C. vi sono nominati, essendovi compresi nel numero dei Guelfi.
