Ancienne et très noble famille d'origine gréco-albanaise, arrivée dans le sud de l'Italie pour échapper aux persécutions des envahisseurs turcs. Le premier personnage de la famille à s'installer à Guardia Lombardi s'avère être un Giuseppe, de feu Free, à la fin du Xe VIIIe siècle, venu de San Marco in Lamis, aujourd'hui une municipalité de la province de Foggia. La mère de Giuseppe, Anastasia, née vers 1765, était la fille de Michele Antonio Nardella et la sœur de Felice Nardella. De l'union de la famille Caterini, à l'époque Catarina, avec la famille Nardella, est née une évidente communion d'intérêts qui a convergé vers une importante activité commerciale. Les Nardella-Caterinis étaient donc considérés comme des "fondachieri", c'est-à-dire les propriétaires d'un entrepôt où, selon la réglementation locale, des marchandises étaient stockées et / ou vendues, principalement des épices et des médicaments mais, dans des zones particulières, également des fruits et des espèces
