Famiglia patrizia e dogale genovese, costituita dalla unione al principio del secolo XIV di alcune famiglie di Genova. Nel secolo XI la famiglia Della Volta, già cospicua, venendo, pare da Lerici, si trapiantò in Genova, dove subito salì alle maggiori cariche del comune. Il Crollalanza le assegna già nel secolo X parecchi feudi nel Genovese (Giornale Araldico XXIV, 260). A ogni modo fu considerata una delle antiche famiglie viscontili consolori di Genova, e nel secolo XII essa e la famiglia Da Castello erano le più potenti case di fazione imperiale nella città, in competizione, sovente sanguinosa, con la famiglia Avvocato di parte pontificia. Fin da quei tempi ebbero consoli del comune, arcivescovi della diocesi e altre alte cariche civili, militari ed ecclesiastiche.
