Antichissima famiglia, che trae la sua origine dagli Obertenghi e precisamente da Oberto, conte di Luni, che avendo concorso ad innalzare al regno di Italia Berengario II fu investito d'una nuova marca diventando così il capostipite di altra delle progenie marchionale. Il Litta ricorda come primo dei membri della famiglia un Corrado, vivente nel 1126, il cui figlio Sopramonte militò sotto le bandiere di Federico Barbarossa prendendo parte all'assedio di Milano; fu investito il 31 luglio 1158 della signoria di Viadana, nella quale fu confermato nel 1196 dall'imperatore Enrico VI. Da Angelina Stanga ebbe Guido, padre di C., al quale nel 1226 l'imperatore Federico II confermò il possesso di Viadana; fu podestà di Arezzo e di Modena.
