Famiglia di antica nobiltà, originaria di Firenze, nota sin dal secolo XI, ove tenne il governo della repubblica nel 1176. Nelle fazioni con i ghibellini essendo i membri della famiglia di parte guelfa furono più volte molti suoi componenti posti al bando della repubblica; fra essi Guido poeta caro all'Alighieri. Nel secolo XIV la famiglia si diramò in Calabria in persona di Filippo divenuto giustiziere di Val di Crati e terra Giordana. I Cavalcante di Firenze si estinsero ai principi del secolo XVIII, dopo aver conseguito più volte il priorato e la dignità senatoria. La famiglia di Napoli godette nobiltà a Cosenza, Gaeta e Napoli nel seggio Capuano (1793). Vennero ricevuti nell'ordine di Malta dal 1595, e dichiarati ammissibile nelle RR. Guardie del Corpo. Furono signori di Cerenzia, Pietramala, Serta di Leo, Verbicaro ecc. Marchesi di Tortorello, duchi di Caccuri dal 1745, di Malvito e di Turano. La prima linea
