Familia antigua e ilustre de origen portugués, llamada Cavallo o Cavallotti, que llegó a Amantea con un Antonino, de Martino, Cavallotti, un noble portugués, donde fue inscrita, en tiempos muy remotos, en el asiento de S. Basilio. La familia obtuvo entonces el cargo de portulano, guardián de los puertos y playas de Calabria, como un privilegio de la reina Giovanna II de Anjou, confirmado por los reyes Alfonso y Ferdinando de Aragón, y, en 1502, del Consalvo de Córdoba. Se vistió con el vestido de Malta en 1595 y fue atraída por Pietramala, en la persona del noble capitán Scipione Cavallotti. Entre los personajes que, más, otorgaron prestigio a esta familia, sin elevar nada al valor de lo omitido, recordamos: Giacomo, juez de la gran corte de Vicaria, bajo la reina Giovanna II; Virgil, que mantuvo la prisión a su costa y luchó en la batalla de Lepanto, en 1571;
