Antichissima famiglia fiorentina, le cui prime notizie certe si rinvengono a Firenze nel XIII secolo, essendo ascritta nell'arte della seta, in cui ebbe dei Consoli, fra i quali Dino, nel 1225. Un Ghigno, già confinato fuori di Firenze, fu poi tra i quattordici buoni uomini e savi che sostennero per due anni (1281-1282) il nuovo governo di Firenze. Durante il periodo dantesco ottennero (1298-1342) per undici volte il priorato, e dettero alla Repubblica, nel 1330, un gonfaloniere di giustizia, nella persona di Riccio Buto, il quale appartenne al Magistrato dei dodici nel 1336. Nel 1342, fra i molti che abbandonarono Firenze, vi fu anche un membro di questa famiglia, di nome Pietro, che riparò alla Corte del Patriarca di Aquileia; iniziando così il ramo del casato nelle provincie venete, e che ebbe in seguito l'investitura del feudo di Cozur nella provincia di Albona, in Istria.
