Famiglia trevigiana assai antica e nobile propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Si vuole che il capostipite sia un Cavasi, amico e consigliere di Rachide Re dei Longobardi, che nell'anno 750 edificò il castello a cui diede il proprio nome ed i suoi discendenti furono detti Cavasi, da Cavasio, Cavasi, de Cavasi etc. Prese, dunque, il nome dal castello omonimo di sua signoria. Gualperto da Cavasi, valoroso capitano dei Trevigiani, godette del titolo di Conte di Cavasi nel XII secolo. Nel 1198 la sua vedova Lodovica Capilupi e suo figlio Gualpertino comprarono il castello d'Onigo e mutarono il loro titolo da Conti di Cavasi a Conti d'Onigo. Questa famiglia è menzionata dallo storico F. Schroder nel suo " Repertorio genealogico delle famiglie confermate nobili, e dei titolati nobili esistenti nelle provincie venete", stampato dalla tipografia di Alvisopoli nel 1830, e nel "Dizionario Storico Blasonico" del Crollalanza, Forni
