Antica ed assai nobile famiglia ligure da Finale detta Cavassola ma, talvolta, scritta anche Cavasola. Il Filelfo fece menzione di Nicolò, che nella guerra di Finale del 1448 si adoperò nel trattare la resa di quella cittadina ai Genovesi, i quali si avvalsero poi di lui nell'amministrazione del luogo; cosicché, rientrato il marchese Del Carretto con aiuti del Monferrato nel possesso del Finale, Nicolò dovette esulare nella vicina Varazze, dove si accasò e morì. Da lui nacque Giovanni, padre di Geronimo, il cui figlio Giovanni Antonio attuario civile del marchesato di Finale, durante la seconda e ultima guerra di Finale si rifugiò col marchese nel castello di Gavone, assediato e poi avuto dai Genovesi: morì esule in Pietra Ligure.
