Ancienne et très noble famille ligure de Finale connue sous le nom de Cavassola mais parfois aussi écrite Cavasola. Filelfo fait mention de Nicolò, qui, dans la guerre de Finale en 1448, fut impliqué dans les négociations pour la reddition de cette ville aux Génois, qui l'utilisèrent ensuite dans l'administration du lieu ; de sorte que, une fois que le marquis Del Carretto revint en possession de Finale avec l'aide du Monferrato, Nicolò dut fuir vers la ville voisine de Varazze, où il s'installa et mourut. Lui est né Giovanni, père de Geronimo, dont le fils Giovanni Antonio, actuaire civil du marquisat de Finale, s'est réfugié avec le marquis dans le château de Gavone pendant la deuxième et dernière guerre de Finale, qui fut assiégé puis repris par le Génois : il mourut en exil à Pietra Ligure . Son fils était le savant juriste Erasmo (né en 1554), maire
