Famiglia originaria della Spagna, come ebbe a dimostrare nell'aggregazione alla nobiltà di Bari, trapiantatasi nel regno di Napoli nel sec. XVI con Francesco, Maestro di Campo nell'Esercito dell'Imperatore Carlo V, Cavaliere dell'ordine di S. Giacomo, della Spada. Il di lui figlio Giovantommaso ebbe nel 1595, dal Re Filippo II il titolo trasmissibile di Marchese. E ciò "in vista dell'antica nobiltà della famiglia, l'inviolata fedeltà, i fruttuosi servizi della sua prosapia, la perizia e l'uso dell'arte militare e delle lettere verso dei Re predecessori". Tale titolo l'8 ottobre 1798 fu annotato nel Cedolario di Terra di Lavoro a favore di Vincenzo e nuovamente riconosciuto a 12 luglio 1853 nella persona di Domenico. Ricevuta ripetutamente nel S.M.O. di Malta, per la prima volta nell'anno 1612 (A. S. N. v. XXVI Pr. di Capua) e nel 1624 nella persona di Giuseppe Avati, Cavaliere di Giustizia. Un ramo della medesima famiglia ottenne nel 1717
