On trouve ce nom aussi écrit Chavas. Famille de la ville de Montfaucon-en-Velay. Filiation depuis Jean de Chave porvu en 1498, de la judicature de St-Ferréol-en-Forez. Fixée au XVIème siècle en Haut-Vivarais, avec Sébastien de Chave allié en 1549 à Jeanne Fouilhac dame du Col. Cette noblesse avait dérogé et fut réhabilitée le 17 juin 1686. Alexandre Chave sgr. de la Chavas, devint baron d'Ay en Vivarais, par acquisition de cette terre en 1753, au marquis de Satillieu. Autre branche: Noblesse du Velay, possessionnée en Vivarais. Simon Chave est qualifié en 1550, gentilhomme du Puy, sgr. de Chave en Dombes. Gaspard fit enregistrer en 1696 ses armoires dans d'Hozier. Il prend en 1698, la dénomination de sgr. du Mas. Pierre-Balthazar et Louis-Raphaël de Chave fondent en 1737, une chapelle au Mas près Tence. Convoquée le 31 mars 1789, à l'assemblée de la sénéchaussée du Puy.
