Die alte Adelsfamilie von Ligurien, ursprünglich Cazella genannt, wurde bereits im 12. Jahrhundert in der gleichnamigen Burg von Montoggio gegründet und ist seit 1173 bekannt, als ein Familienmitglied unter den Unterzeichnern eines Bündnisvertrags mit dem Marquis von Massa war ;; Vorfahr war Ansaldus, von dem es Informationen aus dem Jahr 1185 gibt.
